Week 3

Image
Week 3 has gone by so quickly, and it was very crazy week, for a lot of different reasons.   I got to teach a full day on Monday, and I even taught a couple of lessons on Tuesday.   But, also, we felt a 6.4 magnitude earthquake from the south side of Java on Tuesday, so we haven’t been able to do as much this week.   The next couple weeks are going to be a lot of catching up on assignments and concepts. Before I get into everything that happened this week, I wanted to go over my goals from the past week and where I am in meeting those goals. My first goal was to get through a full day of just me teaching.   I am very happy to say that it was a successful Monday of teaching lessons.   I taught a vocabulary lesson as well as a reading lesson.   For the vocabulary lesson, the students were learning about the Latin root “plic” which means “fold.”   After some direct instruction, I decided to the Fly Swatter Game as a formative assessment.   The students, overall, loved playing it.   I

Week 2

I can't believe that it's already been 2 weeks of student teaching!  It feels like it's been a couple months, but I guess when you see your students all day 5 days a week, the days can feel long.  At this point, I know my students fairly well now.  A few of them have already been wondering if I'll be coming back.  They're all really sweet, and I'm lucky to share a classroom with them for 5 more weeks.  These next 5 weeks are going to go by so quickly! Last week, I made some goals for myself, and here's where I am in meeting them.  My first goal was to teach my lessons confidently and effectively.  In all honesty, I think I really did a great job with teaching my lessons this week.  Needless to say, everything was an adjustment, so I knew that I shouldn't be beating myself up about how I taught.  This week, I taught two lessons spread out between Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, I taught my first vocabulary lesson. In 6th grade, my cooperating

Week 1: Welcome to Indonesia!

This week has been a really great week!  It's crazy to be in Indonesia on the other side of the world (and the equator) teaching 6th grade English.  My goals earlier this week were the following: Learn all the students' names (there's 57!) Observe and practice my cooperating teacher's teaching style Adjust to everything By day 2, I learned all of the students' names!  My teacher put together a "Who Am I?" game where they would write a paragraph about themselves, and I would have to guess who was who.  It worked out really well, and I know my students much better. I've been able to see my teacher teach a lot, but there are often times where he lets the students do a lot of their work in class.  He taught a vocabulary lesson this week, modeling it for me for when I do it this upcoming week.  He has the students look up the words in the dictionaries and then together, they create an easier definition.  But, for the majority of the week
